Dvd Stopped Working Windows 10

My wife upgraded her computer to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Prior to upgrading, her DVD/CD reader/writer worked fine. After the upgrade it no longer works. You can load and eject a disk but after closing the drive, it just times out without ever loading. It is not possible to read or write data to/from disks. I'm a GNU/Linux guy so this is a bit out of my comfort zone. I could use some help. here's what I've done so far:

SOLVED: Asus external Blu-Ray/DVD external drive not working in Windows 10. December 5, 2015 I have an external Blu-Ray/DVD external drive for my Windows laptop. Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or select Allow; In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then select Uninstall.

1. Googled the problem and found hundreds of forum threads about this issue, so I know it's a widespread problem after Windows 10 upgrades that has existed for over a year on a wide range of computers (Dells, HP, etc) and DVD brands. Unfortunately 90% of the forum threads contain lots of people complaining about the problem and no definitive solutions. A few suggested solutions were found (see next items).

2. I checked the device manager and the DVD/CD drive shows up normally. Properties show the generic Windows driver and claims the device is working normally. I tried uninstalling the driver, then rebooting. Driver was automatically re-installed but it did not solve the problem. Tried deleting the device completely and rebooted. Device reappeared but still did not solve the problem.

3. A few forums offered an obscure solution that involved editing a registry entry: 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesatapiController0 EnumDevice1 0x00000001'

Windows

I checked this but the entry is already present on our system.

4. I've verified the hardware itself is working fine on Windows 7, it only fails to work properly after 'upgrading' to Windows 10.

So, can anyone from Microsoft offer any help on this one?
